Komati Downstream Development Project and sugarcane farming

The Komati Downstream Development Project (KDDP) in Eswatini aims to reduce poverty by increasing household incomes and food security through the development of irrigated sugarcane farming. The project focuses on converting customary land into sugarcane production, utilizing Swaziland's water share from the Maguga Dam, and providing irrigation infrastructure and credit to smallholder farmers.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Project Goals:
The KDDP seeks to overcome rural poverty and enhance the contribution of Communal Titled Land (CTL) to the country's GDP by commercializing small-scale sugarcane farming, according to the UPSpace Repository.

Key Components:
The project includes developing 7,400 ha of irrigated crops, primarily sugarcane, along with maize, vegetables, and bananas. It also involves providing irrigation systems, infrastructure, and credit to support farmers in intensifying and diversifying their agricultural production.

Smallholder Involvement:
Farmers are encouraged to form associations or cooperatives to access financial and technical assistance and secure quota contracts with millers.

Impact on Food Security:
While the KDDP aims to improve food security through increased income, research on the project notes that changes to the EU Sugar Protocol have impacted the financial viability of farmers' associations, potentially affecting food security.

Challenges:
Some farmers' associations have been more successful than others, with factors like access to finance, business management skills, and technical knowledge impacting productivity and the ability to repay loans.
